Welcome to the May 2026 edition of my e-Newsletter!
It has been such a joy to spend the past month back in the community, catching up with residents and saying hello to so many familiar faces. From the Fairfield Easter Show to the final New Year celebrations of the season with our Lao and Khmer/Cambodian communities, this month has been a wonderful reminder of what makes Fowler so special. I never take for granted the privilege of sharing these moments with you.
I also want to warmly congratulate Archbishop Amel Nona on his election as Patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church, now His Beatitude Patriarch Mar Paul III. Elected by the Synod of Bishops in Rome on 12 April, this is a deeply significant moment for Chaldean Catholics around the world, and especially for Australia’s Iraqi Christian community, including the many families who call our local area home.
Over the years, I have had the honour of engaging with His Beatitude at countless Chaldean cultural and religious events, and I am always struck by his warmth and genuine welcome. His leadership has touched so many lives here in Sydney, and I am so pleased to see this recognition on the world stage.
Last month, I also had the privilege of joining the first all women parliamentary delegation to Timor-Leste, focused on women’s economic empowerment and strengthening Australia’s relationship with one of our closest neighbours. It meant a great deal to me to carry the voices of our local Timorese community in Fowler with me on this trip, a community whose story of resilience, family, and contribution to our area runs deep.
We were honoured to meet President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, two leaders held in deep respect by the Timorese people. It was a meaningful opportunity to build relationships, share ideas on gender equality, and hear firsthand from women leading change across Southeast Asia.
Submissions are now open for the Raise Our Voice in Parliament competition.
From 12 to 15 October, as part of Youth Voice in Parliament Week, federal politicians across Australia will read 90-second speeches written by young people aged 25 or under from their electorate.
This year’s writing prompt is: “What is one big issue shaping your future, and what is a meaningful action you want Parliament to take on it?”
I encourage young people in Fowler to take part. This is your chance to speak about the issue that matters most to you, in your own words, and have your voice heard in the Parliament of Australia. Submissions close on 7 August 2026. Head to my website for more information.
There is much ahead this month, from Budget Week in Canberra to our very first careers expo – Fowler Future Fest – right here at home. I look forward to sharing it all with you.
