Empowering the next generation of leaders to understand and shape our democracy.

In 2026, National Youth Parliament (NYP) will provide150 young people with a unique opportunity in Canberra to explore aspects of the role of a Member of Parliament and to learn about parliamentary processes and democracy.

The NYP is a national civics leadership program designed for young Australians aged 16–17 who want to explore how parliament and law making really work.

Through immersive, hands-on experiences, this program helps young people understand how parliamentary decisions are made and how they can make a difference in their communities and across the country.

Whether you’re passionate about democracy or simply curious about how laws are created, this is your chance to go behind the scenes of democracy and step into your leadership potential. No prior experience is required – just curiosity, commitment, and a desire to learn.

The Department of the House of Representatives is partnering with the Y Australia to deliver this program.
