Misinformation and Social Media

The surge of mis- and disinformation online has dramatically altered the digital landscape in recent years, impacting daily societal life. The current Albanese Labor Government believes it is taking necessary steps to keep Australians safe by granting the Australian Communications and Media Authority the power to monitor digital platforms for what they define as misinformation and disinformation.

Many constituents in the Fowler community have expressed their strong opposition to this Bill. Given the Bill was rushed through the House of Representatives, it was heartening to hear that the Albanese Labor Government has now abandoned this Bill after realising it would not pass the Senate.

I also voted against the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024 that would ban children younger than 16 years from social media. I think that this bill is misplaced in terms of interfering with the rights and responsibilities of parents and guardians.

Education (HECS-HELP loans)

Last month, I introduced my Private Member’s Bill: the Higher Education Support Amendment (Fair Study and Opportunity) Bill 2024. This coincided with the government’s announcement of their election promise to slash 20% off all student debts.

If the Government supports this Bill, it will overhaul the unjust price surge on Arts courses imposed by the former Government’s Job-Ready Graduates (JRG) package. Consultation with Fowler’s youth and industry research has shown that JRG was a redundant scheme – students will pursue their interests, and Australia needs the humanities to complement science and technology. It is shameful that the Albanese Labor Government has done nothing to reverse this unfair and massive increase in arts degree costs.

I will continue to fight for all students who work tirelessly and invest significantly in gaining the skills and education that will enrich not only their own lives but also our entire community.
